Local tip
Explore the nearby Vrijdagmarkt area for a lively atmosphere and discover more of Ghent's local culture after your visit to De Dulle Griet.

Located in the energetic city of Ghent, De Dulle Griet offers a unique experience for those looking to explore Belgian beer culture. Situated at Vrijdagmarkt 50, this legendary beer cafe is renowned for its distinctive medieval ambiance and an impressive range of Belgian craft beers. One of the key attractions of De Dulle Griet is its famous house beer, the 'Max van 't Huis', served in an exceptionally large coachman's glass. This isn’t just a drink but a theatrical ritual; patrons must temporarily trade one of their shoes, which is placed in a basket and lifted to the ceiling, for the privilege of enjoying this unique brew. This quirky custom ensures a memorable visit for all its guests.

The cafe also highlights the eclectic brews from Stadsbrouwerij Gruut, a specialized city brewery in Ghent that innovatively uses a secret spice mix instead of hops, resulting in beers with a distinct character. Guests can enjoy a variety of these hop-free options, such as the citrus-infused Gruut Blond or the Gruut Wit, which features delightful hints of orange and coriander. For those who prefer a richer taste, the Gruut Dark Amber offers warm, complex notes with a hint of caramel.

De Dulle Griet suits both curious beer enthusiasts and seasoned aficionados seeking to savour unique, locally crafted flavors in an environment that mirrors the historical and vibrant atmosphere of Ghent itself. It's an ideal venue for those who enjoy immersing themselves in cultural traditions, as well as anyone interested in discovering innovative approaches to Belgian beer.

Amazing beer selection! They offer the famous boot beer that requires you to leave your shoe at the bar. Indoor and outdoor seating available and friendly staff.

Had to check out this place to see if they really take your shoes when you order a beer. And they did not disappoint! Definitely worth checking out. It was quite the experience and I’d come back for sure. AND, they had an entire selection of gluten free beers!

Service took awhile but do be patient. Then I was there, a single waiter have to service the entire indoor section. He was still very professional and friendly even though you can tell he is overworked. His recommendations were great

A great place with a wide selection of different beers. They also have their typical 1.5L beer, but you have to leave one shoe as a deposit for it, which makes the experience even more fun and memorable. I definitely recommend visiting this place.

Had to do the Kwak. Very busy, clean, the staff was helpful with the drink order. Good atmosphere. I don't know how nice the food is as myself and partner stopped off for a drink, they were serving cheese and meat platters I noticed. I love the décor in the place very oldie worldie. Definitely would go back. Cheers guys.
