Parc du Cinquantenaire

Parc du Cinquantenaire (Fifty years park)

In the late 19th century, King Leopold II was determined to provide Belgium with magnificent buildings and beautiful parks. The former parade ground of Cinquantenaire Palace was transformed to provide an area for the locals to walk, as well as a cultural center with the inclusion of several museums.

The project was to create a single place to present all the knowledge of the nation. The Cinquantenaire Park was created in 1880 to host the exhibition celebrating fifty years of independence from Belgium and was awarded with numerous prestigious awards, including the "The Grand International Contest of Science and Industry" (1888) and the "Universal Exhibition" (1897).

The Cinquantenaire Park is surrounded by museums en Autoworld, but also by the great Mosque and Islamic Center which opened in 1978 on the northwest side.
